BOSTON HEIGHTS - Residents overwhelmingly voted to renew a five-year, 1.75-mill fire levy Aug. 3.

According to final but unofficial results from the Summit County Board of Elections, 205 voted for Issue 1 (74 percent), while 72 voted against the issue (26 percent).

The city will begin collecting funds from the fire levy Jan. 1, 2005. The current levy expires Dec. 31,2004.

The levy will cost the owner of a $100,000 home $175 annually and generate approximately $87,000 per year for the village. The levy roillage is the same amount as the levy set to expire at the end of the year.

Boston Heights Fire Chief Jim Robinson has said funds generated by the levy will be used to maintain current equipment; purchase new equipment, such as hoses and turnout gear; and update the fire station "to meet current safety regulations." Possible plans include building an additional garage to house fire apparatuses and equipment.

Levy funds also will be used to maintain the fire department's six vehicles — two engines, and one tanker, a grass fire unit, the chief's duty car and an emergency medical services ambulance.
